The Middle School of Plainville celebrated Rare Disease Awareness Day by supporting the Glut1 Deficiency Foundation in honor of a 7th-grade student, Braden Shumbo. Glut1 Deficiency is a condition where glucose doesn't reach the brain properly, which affects developmental growth, learning, movement, speech, and can cause seizures. There are fewer than 1,000 people in the world living with Glut1 Deficiency. Braden is one of two people in Connecticut with this condition. The 2018 Love Some1 With Glut1 campaign ran from February 14th-28th. Braden kicked off the event by creating a report to educate the Middle School community about Glut1 Deficiency. Within the two weeks, donations were collected from staff and Love Some1 With Glut1 bracelets were sold at the Middle School and at the district’s student/staff/parent unified basketball game. On February 28th, which is officially Rare Disease Awareness Day, middle school staff and students wrapped up the campaign by wearing yellow to show their support. The school’s Art Club also created yellow ribbons for staff to wear. A total of $640 was raised, which was donated to Braden’s Love Some1 with Glut1 fundraising page on the Glut1 Deficiency Foundation website. All donations help to fund programs to increase awareness and fund research to support patients and families affected by Glut1.
